02-03 Grant Synopsis Goal: Expand the Tobacco
Coalition in Union County to include diverse partners
1.
Assess the coalition’s composition, for instance - Types of organization represented - Extent of member’s ability to be
liaisons for their organizations. - Members capacity for outreach to
multi-cultural groups within their communities. 2. Recruit new coalition
members to fill identified gaps in coalition composition, and hold
informational meetings regarding the coalition’s tobacco prevention
mission Goal: Decrease tobacco sales to
minors in Union County
1.
Conduct a survey of tobacco retailers in Union County to determine their
knowledge of Arkansas laws regarding tobacco sales to minors and FDA
regulations regarding checking ID. 2. Establish merchant education
program based on survey results. 3. Conduct a “Reward & Reminder”
compliance check program. Goal: Create tobacco-free
environments for Union County
2 Meet with local media to highlight problems with secondhand smoke exposure to advocate for change. 3. Assess tobacco policies (existence, content, and actual practices) for restaurants in Union County. 4. Recruit local youth to create and implement campaign to promote “tobacco-free home” and “tobacco-free car” policies. 5. Assess tobacco policies (existence, content and actual practice) for other workplaces in Union County. 6. Assess tobacco policies (existence, content and actual practices) for licensed day care centers.
Goal: Reduce exposure (particularly of youth) to tobacco advertising and promotion. 1. Conduct an assessment of the extent of tobacco advertising in retail outlets and gas stations. 2. Assess the extent of tobacco promotion in Union County at specialevents, festivals, booths at fairs, etc.
Goal: Promote the utilization of cessation resources in Union County 1. Assess cessation resources for adults and youth in Union County. 2. Promote cessation classes to local employers and schools.3. Assess local health services and prevention agencies to determine whether they provide information on hazards of smoking during pregnancy and cessation resources.
Goal: Train youth leaders and advocates for tobacco prevention 1. Conduct a leadership training for the middle school and high school students in Union County and other South Arkansas schools. 2. Train high school leaders and advocates of tobacco prevention by conducting a state PRIDE Conference with a strong emphasis on tobacco prevention.
